In an attempt to set SMART goals – goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound – many of my 14 for 2014 feel a little small. Although certain goals require attention every week, and there’s the massive goal of publishing a book, for some reason they’re not motivating me as much I would like.
In the meantime, today’s Daily Prompt has given me the opportunity to think bigger:
There are 344 days remaining in the year. Describe what you’d like to be doing on day 211. (Hint: that’s July 30th.)
The prompt title was ‘Predictions’, but the description asks what I’d like to be doing in six months’ time, and the two are a whole lot different. The latter is better, so here is a little daydream, courtesy of the Daily Prompt…
By the 30th of July, I’ll be a year older, and no longer able to argue about whether or not I’m in my mid-twenties. That makes me the same age as these people:
I’ll (still) be older than this person:
So now I feel like a massive underachiever. By July, I… am going to have started writing a novel. (OK, it’s difficult for a realist – pessimist perhaps? – to get too carried away.)
I will be living in the city of big red buses and Big Ben:
My flat will look like this:
I will have a fabulous job in publicity, marketing, editorial or rights (I’m really not fussy, guys) in a bustling publishing office, bringing fiction like The Humans and The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry to the public.
My weekends will be spent in places like this:
My man will be something like this:
I will go and see a musical every month.
I will be sick of the smell of the M&M shop. (Maybe.)
I will have visited (or have solid plans to visit) Italy.
And my friends and I will be like this:
So all in all, things don’t look too shabby.

Minor edit: 25 January, because I aged myself more than necessary.
Hey there!
Found your through Suzie.
I’m guessing you’ll be 28 in July? I found 27 tough for the reasons I think you are alluding to. Suddenly I felt there was this long list of stuff I should have accomplished and hadn’t. I’ve asked if others felt the same at that age and it varied – but everyone has “that age.” The neverending clash of expectations and reality and all that.
I enjoyed your post – entertaining. And I love the theme/direction of your blog. All the best for achieiving your goals in 2014!
As an aside – I lived briefly in London for 4 months. I managed a broadway show a month and loved it. My flat was also smaller than the one in your photo and shared with 3 others – but I loved it just the same.
Hi Louise, thanks for visiting! Glad you enjoyed the post.
I’m actually going to be 25, so it’s that kind of stage where I might not be mid-twenties yet (I think so, but my friends aren’t up for thinking they are) but I will be soon. I definitely feel like I’m already a bit behind everyone else!
Your job in London sounds amazing, and so does the flatshare. I’ve tentatively set a realistic date for the big move, so I’m really looking forward to all the possibilities!
Hi there!
I’ve met you through Suzie81. It is fun to know that you are up to. Good lucck on your daydreaming, bur be careful what you wish for: They might come true!
Hi! Funnily enough, that is definitely something I’ve found to be true. Normally the things I think I want don’t meet my expectations, and disappointments can turn out to be great!
Lund you on suzi81…nice blog!!!!
Thank you!
Clever! Great imagery too. I found you at Suzie81’s blog party. Nice to meet you!
Thank you, and thanks for stopping by! Nice to meet you too!
Ha–so jealous of Veronica Roth! My goal was to be published by 30, but we’ll see what happens. 🙂 Cool post–thanks for sharing!!
Thanks! When I was younger I said that I wanted to be published by 16 – overly ambitious! Good luck with your goal!
