Normally Lewisham isn’t top of anyone’s list of places they want to visit. (I can say that because I live here.) However, this summer many London foodies have made their way to South London to try Model Market, a pop-up brought to you by Street Feast.
Open every Friday and Saturday, from 5 p.m. until midnight, Model Market is home to lots of brilliant local traders. Whether you’re looking for spicy chicken, maple-bacon burgers, or vegetarian options, you’ll find something here.
I’ve got to be honest: as a fussy eater, I really wasn’t bothered about visiting, but I went along because my friend loves this kind of thing (#hipster). I was immediately impressed by a giant cocktail contained in a watermelon, although I sadly didn’t get one myself.
What we did try was a little of almost everything else. We split one of the Double Candy Bacon burgers from Mother Flipper, but we were so hungry by this point that I missed getting a photo. We followed it up with a couple of sliders, chicken and ice cream from the fantastically named Up In My Grill, Mother Clucker and Scoopsy Daisy respectively.
The ice cream from Scoopsy Daisy was amazing: they blend real fruit in with it. I opted for strawberry and raspberry, while my friend got something like blueberry and banana.
As well as this cute little ice cream stall, there is another place to satisfy those of us with a sweet tooth: SE Cakery. We got a Party Stack – a sponge with buttercream and Smarties and sprinkles – and a selection of brownies. I could eat a hundred of the salted caramel brownies from this place and still go back for more.
For those of you who love street food (or perhaps just food in general – who doesn’t?) Model Market is on for one more month, finishing on Saturday 3 October. It is £3 entry after 7 p.m., but free before.
In the meantime, you can find far more photos on Instagram to make you hungry.
